According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen is set to become the new manager of Wigan Athletic.

The Dutchman has been part of the backroom staff at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson since 2007, but has chosen to depart the club following his retirement and the appointment of David Moyes as his replacement.

Moyes has been keen as well to bring over some of his coaching staff from old club Everton, where it is expected that Wigan’s Roberto Martinez will take over next season.

Martinez has impressed a number of pundits with his work with Wigan, and left the club on something of a high after leading them to a shock victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

However, Wigan were relegated from the Premier League just days later, and Martinez is keen to return to management in the top flight.

Meuelensteen is highly rated as a coach, though he is relatively inexperienced in management, with a short and unsuccessful spell in charge of Danish club Brondby his only position of note in his career.
