Tottenham are reportedly set to hijack Roma’s imminent capture of Man United winger Nani and PSV Eindhoven youngster Kevin Strootman according to Italian source Corriere dello Sport.
This source claims that White Hart Lane director of football Franco Baldini has decided to set his sights on the pair much to the chagrin of his former Stadio Olimpico employers as he sets about bringing in further summer additions to add to the capture of Paulinho last week.
Roma were said to be close to completing moves to bring in the pair as new boss Rudi Garcia looks to strengthen his squad but efforts to do so have been dealt a blow by Baldini’s actions.
Nani is certainly likely to leave Old Trafford having already become something of a bit-part player and seemingly set for an even more limited role given Wilfried Zaha has finally arrived at Man United after helping Crystal Palace into the Premier League.
The Portuguese winger certainly has plenty to offer but the adaptable wide-man would have to fight Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon for a role in Andre Villas-Boas’s starting eleven though perhaps the Tottenham boss is looking to use the Welsh international in a more central role in order to accommodate the Man United man.
Interest in Strootman is harder to fathom as Villas-Boas’s Tottenham squad is jam packed with talented central midfield options with the likes of Sandro, Moussa Dembele and Lewis Holtby being joined by the aforementioned Paulinho.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy appears keen to offer Villas-Boas a big transfer fund to help secure that all important top four spot and with Gareth Bale still at the North London club Spurs could well be set to mount another genuine challenge for a Champions League berth.
