Bundesliga side were keen for midfielder to return to the club.
Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted the club have been in contact with midfielder Shinji Kagawa over a potential return to the club according to Goal.com.
The Manchester United star arrived at Old Trafford last summer after a number of highly impressive seasons with Dortmund.
His performances helped Dortmund beat their bitter Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich to the German title two years ago and he remains a fan favourite at the club.
Dortmund are currently in the process of rebuilding after they were beaten to silverware by Bayern on both domestic and European fronts last season.
To add insult to injury, Bayern announced the signing of former Dortmund star Mario Gotze at the end of last season.
That has paved the way for a determined Dortmund effort to strengthen the squad that has seen the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan join the club in recent weeks.
Klopp has now revealed that the club also sounded out Kagawa about a possible return to Dortmund.
That was turned down by Kagawa though who claimed that while he is keen to return to the club ‘one day’, he is intent on remaining at Manchester United for the time being.
Kagawa made just seventeen starts in the Premier League last season due to a knee injury and is keen to establish himself in the United first team this season.
