Rooney will hope that he can force through a move to Chelsea but United will try and sell him to a club abroad.
Wayne Rooney is set to hand in a transfer request to Manchester United this week, stating that he wants a new challenge in his career, the Sunday Mirror reports.
The situation surrounding Rooney’s future has dominated the dressing room at Old Trafford during pre-season, with the clubs players expecting the striker to formally ask to leave within the week.
United boss David Moyes has repeatedly stated that the striker isn’t for sale and has held talks with Rooney in a bid to try and persuade him to stay at Old Trafford.
However, Rooney wants to leave and feels that his career would be best suited by a move to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, who have already had a bid rejected by the Red Devils.
With Rooney handing in a transfer request, Chelsea are sure to submit a new bid and test United’s resolve.
Reports suggest that that the Blues will be willing to pay around £30 million for the England international but it is doubtful that United will accept the bid and will instead try and sell the striker to a club abroad.
