The Red Devils have also enquired about the possibility of bringing Juan Mata to Old Trafford as part of the deal.
Manchester United have held talks with Chelsea about the sale of Wayne Rooney and have also enquired about the availability of Blues midfielder Juan Mata, Goal.com reports.
Reports suggest that despite David Moyes continued insistence that Rooney won’t be sold, officials from both clubs have met discuss a possible deal.
The making sticking point between the two clubs at the moment are their differing valuations of the England international.
While United want around £40 million for Rooney, Chelsea aren’t willing to pay much more than £30 million for the 27 year old, which was the amount they offered United in their second failed bid.
United also used the talks with Chelsea to re-iterate their interest in Juan Mata, who won the Blues player of the year award for last season.
Several reports suggested that Chelsea had offered Mata to United when they first tried to sign Rooney earlier in the transfer window.
Although the Blues rejected those reports, United would be interested in selling Rooney if Chelsea were willing to let Mata move to Old Trafford.
Chelsea are unlikely to want to sell Mata to a close rival but that maybe the only way that they can persuade United to part with Rooney.
