Manchester United are hoping that veteran midfielder Michael Carrick will agree a one-year extension to his current contract at Old Trafford, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 32-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season, which would allow him to walk away from the club for free, and there remains some uncertainty over whether the England international will accept United’s policy of only offering one-year deals to players over the age of 30.
Carrick has been a highly reliable and consistent performer for the Red Devils since joining the club in 2006, helping the side to five Premier League titles and one Champions League win since his arrival, though he has also often had his critics for his unspectacular style of play.
Still, he gained some much-deserved recongition for his performances last season as he earned a nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award as he collected his fifth Premier League medal for the club. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year.
United were linked with a number of new midfield players over the summer, eventually signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton, and may continue their search in January, which may have some bearing on Carrick’s decision to sign a new contract.
