Manchester United needed to make signings during the summer, it was bad enough that the club lost the one manager that turned them into a global powerhouse and won two Champions League titles, and to compound the drastic sense of change the new manager then missed out on a series of high profile transfer targets over the summer.

However, those star names are the last of David Moyes’ worries following on from their 4-1 demolition at the hands of neighbours Manchester City this weekend.

The old guard of Ferdinand and Vidic aren’t cutting the mustard anymore and the club are in desperate need of some fresh talent at the back, and here are five that CaughtOffside believes would do very well indeed.

Varane Barcelona

5. Raphael Varane – Real Madrid

The classy young Frenchman has made quite a splash since making the switch to Madrid in 2011. Keeping a clean sheet in his competitive debut against Racing Santander, he then started again in the following game against Rayo Vallecano with a flying back heel.

He has since gone from strength to strength at the club, with the staff keen not to over expose him and ware him out so soon and he has made a steady progress with a healthy run of games that has seen him garner praise from all corners of the football world, especially from former French ace Frank LeBouef claiming that he could become better than Madrid legend Fernando Hierro; “Many compare him to Hierro due to his technique, but on the physical level he is stronger and he is much faster.”

Real already saw off interest from Chelsea earlier in the summer, but Chelsea aren’t the Premier League champions, and they could tempt the 20-year-old with the promise of a more significant title challenge both at home and in Europe where his access to silverware won’t be blocked by an ever dominant Barcelona.
