The Old Trafford side have long been linked with the Argentine and this source believes that Garay’s Lisbon based side will fight off offers for the 27 year old next month though could consider a sale at the end of the current campaign.
With Rio Ferdinand likely to leave the club when his contract comes to an end next summer and Nemanja Vidic suffering with long term injury concerns there is perhaps a very real need to consider a move for fresh central defensive options, not least as both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones appear better suited to alternative roles.
Garay is having an excellent season at Benfica this term, helping his side to keep in touch with Primeira Liga leaders Sporting Lisbon and there is every chance that the former Real Madrid man would be tempted by a move to Man United, a move that would certainly aid his push for a more prominent role in the Argentine national team set-up.
