The French born Moroccan international has been in good form since moving from Udinese to the Stadio Olimpico over the summer and Moyes will hope to lure the 26 year old to the Premier League in January.

Benatia has helped Rudi Garcia’s side to mount a genuine Serie A title challenge having maintained an unbeaten record in Italy’s top tier and one imagines that the Roma boss will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the rock solid defender.

Moyes will see Rio Ferdinand’s contract come to an end in the summer and is unlikely to offer the 35 year old a new deal and with Nemanja Vidic continuing to struggle with consistent injury concerns there is certainly scope for a defensive addition.

This is perhaps all the more important given that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who can both play at centre-back, are arguably better suited to right-back and defensive midfield roles respectively.
