New Red Devils head coach David Moyes has been closely tracking the Argentina international for some time now as the Scot begins to prepare for life at Old Trafford without the services of veteran central-defensive duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

However, following the recent injury sustained by former England international Ferdinand, Moyes has now decided to step up his chase for Garay, with the north-west outfit hoping to be able to now lure the centre back to the Theatre of Dreams before the winter window slams shut for the campaign at the end of this month.

Garay, who has a contract in the Portuguese capital that runs until June 30 2015, has been with Benfica since the summer of 2011, when the Argentinian joined the club from La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid on a four-year deal for a transfer fee of just 5.5m euros.

And in the intervening period, the player has gone on to register seven goals in his 89 matches in total for the Portuguese.
