The Portuguese international winger has found himself out of favour at Old Trafford this season and a loan move away from the club has been mooted as he continues to struggle for game time this season.
Nani has often been tipped to make a move to Serie A with Juventus believed to be leading the charge to bring him on board, however, there is now a strong possibility that he could be heading back to his former club on a short term deal.
The 27-year-old is still fondly thought of back in Lisbon having graduated from Sporting’s highly acclaimed youth academy and it is understood that he would be welcomed back with open arms should the opportunity arise.
“I am surprised because officially we have made no approach,” president Bruno de Carvalho said.
“Nani is one of ours and he will always be well received here. If there is any chance of doing something then we would be happy.”
