Chelsea Boss Says Juan Mata Sale Is Not Linked to Wayne Rooney Pursuit

Blues’ Jose Mourinho says Mata and Rooney deals are separate.

Jose Mourinho has insisted the expected sale of Juan Mata to Manchester United has nothing to do with Chelsea’s pursuit of Wayne Rooney.

Two-time Chelsea player of the year Mata is expected to join United in a £37m deal next week, after being marginalised by Mourinho this season.

The Portuguese has made no secret of his desire to land England striker Rooney, who is stalling on signing a new deal at United. But the Red Devils flatly refused to sell the 27-year-old in the summer, despite reports Rooney had handed in a transfer request in the final months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.

Mourinho, however, insisted Chelsea did not take United’s stance on Rooney into account when considering the Mata offer, and claimed the deals were totally separate.

“You didn’t sell us Wayne Rooney in the summer so we won’t sell you Juan Mata,’ that is not right,” the 50-year-old is quoted as saying by The Guardian.
