The 18 year old is seen by David Moyes as a replacement for veteran Patrice Evra and has been offered a guarantee of a first team spot by the Old Trafford boss, who is looking to beat Chelsea in the race to sign the youngster.
Southampton may struggle to turn down an offer of his magnitude for the England Under 21 international and clearly the South Coast side are used to selling their top talents when big clubs come calling with the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving the St Mary’s side in recent seasons.
Man United have agreed a £37m deal to sign Chelsea’s Juan Mata and Moyes is keen to continue spending this month as he seeks to strengthen his side ahead of a push to secure that all important top four finish.
French international Evra is thought to be likely to leave Man United in the summer when his current contract comes to a close and clearly Moyes doesn’t see Alexander Buttner as a viable replacement, hence the club’s consistent interest in Everton’s Leighton Baines and now Saints starlet Shaw.
