The 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in summer 2012 and has played out of position on the left wing in the majority of his 14 appearances so far this season.

The playmaker has long been linked with a return to Dortmund, while La Liga high-flyers Atletico Madrid are although thought to be monitoring the situation.

Juan Mata’s imminent arrival at United in a £37m deal from Chelsea is only expected to further reduce Kagawa’s chances.

“At this moment I am sure Shinji will stay. There has been no contact and so it is just rumours,” Kagawa’s agent Thomas Kroth told Sky Sports.

When asked if Mata joining Man Utd would affect Kagawa’s future at the club, he said: “No, it is my opinion that he will stay.”

Kagawa typically played as a number 10. for Dortmund but the form of Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck has meant the Japanese has rarely featured centrally.
