The Brazilian is due to move to South Wales in a permanent deal and will be joined by winger Wilfried Zaha, who is set to sign on loan for the remainder of the season.

Unlike his brother, Fabio has struggled to make an impact at United since moving to Old Trafford five years ago and has made just one Premier League appearance this season under David Moyes, with Alexander Buttner deputising for Patrice Evra at left back.

The 22-year-old was sent off in United’s FA Cup clash with Swansea earlier this month after a disastrous cameo and he is unlikely to play for the Red Devils again. Instead, he could sign for Cardiff in time to play against his former club in Tuesday’s Premier League meeting in Manchester.

New Bluebirds boss Solskjaer knows the defender from his time at United and has also used his links with his former club to land highly-rated Zaha.
