Man United are confident of winning the race to sign Southampton teen Luke Shaw according to the Daily Star.

Old Trafford boss David Moyes sees the 18 year old as an ideal long term replacement for veteran Patrice Evra, who is out of contract in the summer, and is willing to offer as much as £22.5m for the England Under 21 international.

Moyes will look to completely refresh his defence with veteran central defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic also out of contracts in the summer and the Scot is likely to be handed significant funds to re-shape his squad.

Chelsea are also known to be keen on Shaw though Jose Mourinho has a wealth of possible alternatives to 33 year old Ashley Cole, with the Blues boss recently using Cesar Azpilicueta in the role and with the option also of drafting in loaned out stars Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Aanholt.

Shaw has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season and is perhaps a more viable option for Moyes with efforts to bring in Everton’s Leighton Baines failing to come to fruition.
