Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino is mindful that teenage sensation Luke Shaw could be lured away from St Mary’s this summer and appears to see Dutchman Buttner as a viable replacement.
25 year old former Vitesse Arnhem wide-man Buttner has looked impressive when called upon but has managed just one Premier League start this term and doesn’t appear to be a player David Moyes sees as taking over from veteran Patrice Evra, with the French international set to be out of contract this summer.
Pochettino may well see his squad raided on multiple occasions at the end of the current campaign with the south-coast side perhaps set to become a victim of it’s own success.
England trio Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert are constantly linked with Southampton exits and the aforementioned Shaw could follow suit.
Man United signed Buttner in August 2012 and has made a total of 22 appearances for the Premier League side.
