Man United have earmarked a move for in-form AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia according to the Daily Express.

The 26 year old Moroccan only moved to the Stadio Olimpico last summer but has proven such a massive success that interest in the former Udinese man remains very high.

Benatia enjoyed three seasons at Udinese before earning his big move to the Italian capital and he has been a regular in Rudi Garcia’s back-line this season, putting in consistent performances that have helped the Giallorossi mount a genuine title challenge.

AS Roma have by far the best defensive record in Serie A, conceding just 11 goals in 24 matches, and Benatia has been the key reason for this stability.

Benatia has also proven his ability in the opposition box, netting five goals thus far this season.

David Moyes sees the no-nonsense centre-back as an ideal replacement for Serbian Nemanja Vidic, who is set to leave Man United this summer when his current contract comes to a close.

The Man United manager is also likely to see Rio Ferdinand leave the club, or retire, when his contract expires in the summer and there is a very real need to bring in competent central defensive additions when the transfer window re-opens.
