Garay has been a long time target of the defending Premier League champions with both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes earmarking him as an eventual replacement for the outbound veteran Nemanja Vidic, who is set to make an exit for Inter Milan at the end of the season.
Reports earlier this week claimed that Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg had been looking into the possibility of doing their own deal to take him away from Portugal this summer, but Tottenham are now said to be preparing their own move for the ex-Real Madrid stopper.
Representatives of the north London side were reportedly in attendance for Benfica’s game against Rio Ave at the weekend, having been impressed by the 27-year-old in their Europa League last-16 tie, in which he scored in the second leg in Lisbon.
Reports are suggesting that Spurs are preparing for life after Jan Vertonghen, who is apparently unhappy at how the club’s season has gone so far and is looking to make a quick getaway from the side this summer too.
