The France international looked set to end his eight year association with the club this summer as the club struggled to offer terms that he thought were suitable for his considerable talents and Ligue 1 duo Paris Saint Germain and Monaco were waiting in the wings to pounce for his signature.

Under David Moyes, who was sacked by the club after just 10 months into a six-year contract, Man United had been searching for a new left-back to replace the 32-year-old, seeing moves for Everton’s Leighton Baines and Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao fail to materialise.

Serie A giants Inter Milan were also tipped with making a move to bring him on board after they had already confirmed the signing of centre-back Nemanja Vidic this summer.

However, reports in Italy have suggested that United are on the verge of offering the 32-year-old a new long term deal in a bid to keep him in the northwest.
