The current Netherlands national team coach is set to be officially named as the new United boss by the middle of next week following the surprise sacking of previous boss David Moyes last week.

And already the experienced Dutch trainer has been busy drawing up a list of potential new recruits for the Premier League giants to go after when the summer transfer window reopens.

Some of these possible targets are understood to be players that Moyes was already intending to move for come the end of the campaign, including the likes of young Southampton left-back Luke Shaw and Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus, although it is also believed that Van Gaal is not so keen on another player the Scot was hoping to land, Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

Meanwhile, the Dutchman also wants to lure Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels to the Theatre of Dreams as a replacement for the departing Nemanja Vidic.
