Manchester United and Barcelona look set to be dealt the blow of missing out on Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus this summer after the German international suffered an ankle injury, the Daily Express reports.
The 25-year-old forward was helped off the pitch in Germany’s 6-1 friendly win over Armenia on Friday evening after appearing to be in considerable pain following a fierce challenge from an opposition player, putting his World Cup hopes into serious doubt in the process.
Reus has been a highly influential player for both club and country in recent years, and a potential six-week layoff could mean he is a big loss for Germany at this summer’s tournament in Brazil.
This setback is also likely to hinder his prospects of sealing a move away from Dortmund, with United and Barcelona believed to be his main suitors going into this summer’s transfer window.
The attacking midfielder, who scored 23 goals in all competitions for Dortmund this season, is valued at around £28m, and is claimed to be a favourite of new United manager Louis van Gaal.
However, for the moment he looks likely to be joining the likes of Radamel Falcao and Franck Ribery as big-name absentees from the World Cup.
