Perez has enjoyed a high successful 18 months with the Lisbon based giants, but is now being tipped to make a move away from the club in the current transfer window with a series of top clubs said to be keen on landing his signature.
He has already rejected moves to Valencia and Lazio and now United have joined the chase – and expect to get their man.
Reports in the Portuguese press are now saying that the Red Devils have tabled a £7m offer for the 28-year-old and are now waiting to hear back from Benfica to find out whether they can hold talks with the player.
New United boss Louis Van Gaal had the chance to check on the player at close quarters during Wednesday night’s World Cup semi-final between Argentina and the Netherlands, but any move would not be going ahead until after Sunday’s final.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the player, but United are now said to be the frontrunners for his signature.
