Manchester United have confirmed that young midfielder Charni Ekangamene has left the club, with the Belgian signing for Jupiler League club Zulte-Waregem on a four-year contract.

Named the club’s Reserve Player of the Year, Ekangamene also spent a short period on loan in League One with Carlisle United, but has now decided to depart Old Trafford, presumably in search of more regular first team opportunities.

Zulte-Waregem have established themselves as one of the leading clubs in the Belgian league, having enjoyed a good run in he Europa League last season that saw them face Wigan Athletic and having taken young Chelsea playmaker Thorgan Hazard on a loan deal and improved the Belgian no end during his time with the club.

Ekangamene will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Hazard, but also Paul Pogba, who also made the decision to leave Manchester United as a young midfielder in search of first team football – albeit to join Juventus rather than a club in Belgium.

Whilst the departure of Ekangamene is far from a body-blow to new United boss Louis van Gaal, many at the club will be sad to see a young player leaving who had been considered as one of the club’s brightest young talents.
