One anticipated departure from Manchester United has now been confirmed, with Portuguese club Benfica announcing the signing of United flop Bebe.

The 24 year-old winger made just 2 Premier League appearances for United since he signed from Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2010 but never made enough of an impact at Old Trafford, being farmed out for loan spells at Besiktas, Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira.

Bebe was an intriguing signing in the first place, having been signed for a significant fee having never made a single appearance for Guimaraes since he joined from lower division club Estrela, with the move largely being based on the player’s impressive pre-season performances for Guimaraes.

Reportedly a tricky winger in the mould of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, who had previously signed for United from Portugal, things never quite developed in the same way for Bebe.

He will be looking to rebuild his career back in his homeland with Benfica, who have been on the lookout for a replacement for winger Lazar Markovic, with the Serbian having signed for United’s Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The departure will also free up some space in the squad for new manager Louis van Gaal, who is expected to want to add more new signings to the duo of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw who have already arrived.
