The 20 year old winger impressed at the World Cup finals and his PSV Eindhoven side have placed an £18m price-tag on the youngster.
Van Gaal has reportedly held a private conversation with Depay, suggesting that the wide-man remains at PSV for another season with his Man United side linked with a potential move for the player next summer.
Louis van Gaal could certainly do with fresh wide-attacking options as the likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Luis Antonio Valencia have all failed to make an impact in recent seasons.
Depay netted 14 goals in all competitions last term and is rightly considered one of the hottest prospects in European football.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is also said to be keen on Depay, who netted twice during Holland’s run to the World Cup semi-finals this summer.
Van Gaal may well be right to advise Depay to secure another season of experience in the Eredivisie but could of course opt instead to sign the winger and then loan him back to PSV Eindhoven, an option that could perhaps suit all concerned.
