Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be set to allow another player to leave the club, with the Mail reporting that Portuguese champions Benfica are interested in securing a deal to sign goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.

Lindegaard has failed to break into the United team beyond first choice David de Gea, whilst van Gaal has also given more frequent opportunities to youngsters Ben Amos and Sam Johnstone in pre-season than he has to United’s long-standing number two.

Benfica have already sold Jan Oblak to Atletico Madrid this summer, whilst neither of the goalkeepers otherwise on the books at the Estadio de Luz have grasped the opportunity with their displays in pre-season.

The 30 year-old has spent four years at Old Trafford, largely as cover for de Gea, since joining from Norwegian side Aalesund, although the Danish international rarely let United down when he was given a chance, often in the domestic cup competitions.

If van Gaal is intending to promote the highly rated Amos to becoming the club’s primary reserve, however, pocketing a small amount of cash for Lindegaard would represent a wise move from van Gaal.

The Dane’s agent seemed to indicate that a move could be on the cards:

“Anders would consider staying in England, but he is actually open to other opportunities too.”
