United manager Louis van Gaal is a big fan of his fellow Dutchman, who has played under him during his time as coach of the Netherlands national side, but it remains to be seen if this mammoth price tag will see United switch their focus elsewhere.

The Red Devils already spent over £150m on new players this summer, bringing in big names such as Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao to improve a squad that struggled badly last season, but van Gaal’s spending may not be over yet.

Strootman is reportedly United’s top target for the January transfer window, but the club’s spending will near the £200m mark for the season if they do opt to bring in the 24-year-old over other midfield candidates.

United were also strongly linked with Juventus star Arturo Vidal for much of the summer, while Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin has also been mentioned as a possible signing in that part of the pitch.

Meanwhile, the club are also growing increasingly confident of re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.
