Arsene Wenger is thought to be interested in the Dutch youngster, with a bid in the region of £8m thought to be enough to tear him away from the Scottish club.

The Gunners are badly in need of defensive reinforcements, with Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny’s injuries stretching thin an already threadbare back line.

Parlour believes van Dijk is the perfect addition, and that Wenger should do everything he can to sign the 23-year-old ahead of their rivals.

“Van Dijk would be a good signing,” Parlour said.

“Arsenal look really short at the back. Koscielny is out now for a little while, which is another blow.

“He’s got to go out and buy a couple of defenders.

“He needs to strengthen if they’re going to have a serious run on the Premier League title. You need to have a big squad.”

The former Arsenal man certainly isn’t wrong, although it doesn’t take a footballing expert to see it either.

Arsenal will be forced to field a makeshift defence against Hull City, and if the new look back line struggles to click instantly then the Gunners’ Premier League title hopes could be over before they even begin.

There are a number of defensive targets Arsene Wenger is believed to be looking at, but van Dijk offers excellent value for money and could be the perfect January addition.
