Young Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has left the club on a loan deal to join League One outfit Doncaster Rovers until January, report the Mail, after returning to fitness in a series of behind-closed-doors friendlies for the Red Devils in recent weeks.

Johnstone spent time on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium having previously played for the likes of Scunthorpe United and Yeovil Town, but was briefly spoken of as a possibility to step up as the club’s main back-up goalkeeper if Anders Lindegaard departed the club, but the Dane remains at Old Trafford as cover for first choice David de Gea.

Doncaster are marooned in mid-table after their relegation to League One, with manager Paul Dickov not yet able to sustain a challenge for promotion back to the Championship this season despite Rovers being one of the pre-season favourites.
