Victor Valdes Will Replace David De Gea At Manchester United, Not Be His Backup

The Red Devils believe the current No.1 will join Madrid.

Manchester United are getting ready to sign Victor Valdes on a free transfer, but the former FC Barcelona goalkeeper won’t act as a backup to current No.1 David de Gea, but rather be his replacement, reports the Independent.

De Gea has been in fine form for the Red Devils over the past two seasons and this has seen great interest from Real Madrid in the 24-year-old, as they look to replace their increasingly unreliable captain Iker Casillas.

The Spaniard is likely to be tempted by a return to Madrid – having signed for United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011 – particularly if the 13-time Premier League winners fail to secure Champions League football again this term.

There is also the added problem of the fact that de Gea’s current contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2016, meaning the club would either need to tie him down to a new deal or seriously consider selling him over the next six months.

Therefore if the ‘keeper were to leave then a suitable replacement would need to be found, as manager Louis van Gaal is not convinced by the current alternatives Ben Amos and Anders Lindegaard.

Valdes has been training with the club as he continues his rehabilitation process from a cruciate ligament injury and the 32-year-old is thought to be tempted by a permanent reunion with van Gaal at the Theatre of Dreams.
