Chelsea’s Nine January Targets: Including Marco Reus And Another Atletico Madrid Star

Who have the Blues been linked with moves for in January? Chelsea are one of the world’s biggest spending clubs, but in recent years their transfer dealings have been very smart.

Right now, Jose Mourinho’s squad looks close to perfect at the moment, but in the cut-throat modern day transfer market, standing still is going backwards, so Chelsea will have plenty of targets lined up for January, if the price is right.

9) Gareth Bale – Real Madrid

A signing that would not make sense for Madrid, Chelsea or Bale right now. But the links are there – the football world has been lit up with rumours of a massive £90m move for the winger.

That would undo all of the hard work that the Blues have put in to become profitable in the last few seasons. Is that worth throwing away for Bale?

Probably, yes.

8) Aymeric Laporte – Athletic Bilbao

The West Londoners are well stocked with defenders at the moment, with Kurt Zouma looking more than capable in the appearances he’s made for the side so far.

But with the talented Laporte apparently available, Chelsea would be mad not to at least test Bilbao with a bid.

7) Sami Khedira – Real Madrid

German midfielder Khedira’s contract runs out this summer, a fact which is attracting bids from every major club in Europe.

He has said he won’t be going in January, but even Madrid won’t be able to turn down money for a player who will otherwise be leaving for free in the summer.

6) Mattia Destro – AS Roma

The 23-year-old has picked up where he left off last season, scoring five in five starts already.

Roma president James Pallotta warned Chelsea off the striker in the summer, but the Blues could easily change his mind with a big enough bid.

5) José Callejon – Napoli

Former manager Rafael Benitez has Callejon to thank for keeping him in a job, after the former Madrid man scored eight goals in Napoli’s first eight league games of the season.

Mourinho knows the wide man from his time at Los Blancos, and should consider bringing him to the Bridge.

4) Raphael Varane – Real Madrid

Another player Mourinho knows and likes. Varane has been unable to get into the Real side now that Sergio Ramos is back from injury, and Chelsea have been linked with a £19m bid the for Frenchman.

3) Anderon Talisca – Benfica

The Chelsea manager admitted he wanted to sign the Brazilian in the summer, but was prevented from completing the deal because of work permit issues.

Now that Talisca has received his first Brazil callup that should be less of a problem, and the lanky striker could be great cover for Diego Costa.

2) Koke – Atletico Madrid

The energetic midfielder is Mourinho’s type of player, with plenty of grit and determination as well as ability on the ball.

The Blues have been linked with the Atletico player again today – but will have to beat Barcelona to his signature.

1) Marco Reus – Borussia Dortmund

Andre Schurrle has disappointed again this season, and it would surprise no-one to see him leave in January.

If he does, Chelsea have a ready-made replacement available in Marco Reus, who is looking to leave Dortmund, and has a €25m release clause.
