Red Devils consider White Hart Lane raid.

Manchester United could be set to try their luck with a bid to sign unsettled Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen this January, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Belgian international is unhappy with life at Tottenham under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, having failed to break into the team’s starting eleven on a regular basis so far this season.

Vertonghen has previously been considered a key player at White Hart Lane, looking particularly strong in his first season at the club in 2012/13 to become regarded as one of the finest defensive talents in Europe.

Able to play centre-back or left-back, there’s no doubt the 27-year-old could do a job for Louis van Gaal’s side, who are desperately short of depth at the back in a number of different areas.

United could do with a new signing in central defence after a poor start to the season from some of their current crop of squad members in that position, while Luke Shaw could also do with a backup player at left-back to challenge him after an unconvincing start to life at the club since his big-money move from Southampton in the summer.

Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar is also said to be a top target for the Red Devils.
