Despite a run of five straight Premier League wins Louis van Gaal isn’t convinced by the displays put in by the defensive trio and issues of form and fitness mean that the Dutchman is ready to offload the Old Trafford stars if consistency can not be achieved.
Van Gaal will be handed funds to sign a fresh central defensive options next summer, Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin being known targets, and as such it’s entirely plausible that one or more of the aforementioned trio could be offloaded.
Smalling was on a good run of form before he went off injured during Man United’s recent win at Southampton whilst fellow England international Jones has been out since October.
Northern Irishman Evans has made just five appearances under van Gaal and has looked poor, most notably so during the club’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat to the MK Dons in a Capital One Cup humbling early in the campaign.
