There have been plenty of strikers linked with Brendan Rodgers’s side, as well as the likes of Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri. But here’s who we think they should be signing in order of priority:

10) Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich)

There is no doubting the Swiss international’s quality, but he hasn’t seen keen on a move to the Premier League, with Italian champions Juventus a more likely destination. Also not what Liverpool need right now.

9) Ogneyi Onazi (Lazio)

A combative and battling midfielder who could put pressure on Lucas’ place in the team, but more of a luxury signing for Brendan Rodgers, who has bigger priorities than signing another midfielder.

8) Jackson Martinez (Porto)

Was heavily linked with Liverpool earlier in the year, but those talks have quietened somewhat in recent weeks. A bit old for the club’s transfer policy at 28, especially considering the price he would demand.

7) Virgil van Dijk (Celtic)

An excellent prospect, but unproven at the top level. Liverpool need a centre back who will walk straight into the team, and Van Dijk probably isn’t that at this stage. He’s also shown signs of wanting to commit to Celtic.

6) Saido Berahino (West Brom)

Another stand out youngster who started the season in fine form. Hasn’t scored since October however, and rumours of a £23.5m transfer fee would be an astronomical amount to pay for a still relatively unproven player.

5) Ron Vlaar & Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)

The duo would both be good additions to the Liverpool squad, and are available in cut-price deals due to the fact that both their contracts are expiring at the end of the season. But are they massively better than what they already have?

4) Sergio Romero (Sampdoria)

Liverpool need a goalkeeper, and one of the better candidates linked is Romero, the Argentina World Cup stopper. However, the Reds have had problems with South American number one’s in the past, just remember Diego Cavalieri.

3) Wilfried Bony (Swansea City)

Liverpool also need a centre forward, and while Bony would come at a huge price – likely to be around £25m – and will be unavailable in January due to the African Cup of Nations, he was the league’s top scorer through 2014.

2) Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon)

Has been in fine goalscoring form so far this season, and has quickly become one of the hottest properties in world football. But as well as demanding a huge price, Lyon seem extremely unwilling to sell – could be difficult.

1) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

If Cech chooses to force his way out of Chelsea in January, Liverpool would be foolish not to try and take advantage. The Blues stopper has proven quality, and would make an excellent signing for almost any team.
