The Old Trafford outfit have made just one significant signing this month, the free transfer capture of keeper Victor Valdes, and van Gaal may well be keen on further strengthening as his side focuses their efforts on securing that all important top four finish.

Man United’s defence has been shaky to say the least, securing just five clean sheets in their last 19 Premier League fixtures, and with his senior centre-backs failing to impress the Dutch manager is ready to launch a £37m bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side sitting bottom of the Bundesliga it would appear to be the ideal time to attempt the capture of the World Cup winner.

In a bid to add more creativity to his attack Louis van Gaal will look to bring in assist-making machine Kevin de Bruyne.

The Belgian left Chelsea for Wolfsburg a year ago and is the top assist maker in the German top tier and is said to be valued at around £30m a fee Man United may well deem affordable as they look to once again dig deep in their push to enhance their chances of once again challenging for major honours and a seat back at the top table of European football, namely the Champions League.
