Louis van Gaal could be copying one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s mistakes at Old Trafford…
Robbie Savage has warned that Manchester United’s record signing Angel Di Maria could be set to follow in the footsteps of well known flop Juan Sebastian Veron at Old Trafford, in his BBC column.
His fellow Argentine was also undoubtedly talented but found it difficult to adapt to the pace of the Premier League and never showed his best form in England.
It is still early on in Di Maria’s Old Trafford career but he has shown similar strengths and weaknesses to the midfielder.
Both seem unable to get enough time on the ball, and are unable to play well consistently.
Savage said: “Di Maria has certainly not come close to showing us his true ability yet. The big question is whether he ever will. Some players are just not suited to English football – and by that I mean the pace of our game.”
He added: “Veron also broke the British transfer record when he joined United for £28.1m in 2001 and the worry for Di Maria is that he is going to follow in his footsteps in another way – by being a fantastically gifted footballer who is an Old Trafford flop.
“Like Di Maria, Veron started well and then had sporadic games where he impressed, but he never really kicked on and established himself as a force in the Premier League, at United or Chelsea.”
The 27-year-old will be hoping to prove the former Blackburn player wrong when the Red Devils take on Arsenal on Monday evening.
