Tottenham couldn’t handle ‘intensity’ claims Man United’s £37m man

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata believes that Spurs couldn’t handle the intensity at which his team played in during their 3-0 victory on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal’s men blitzed the visitors inside 36 minutes, scoring three goals and effectively ending the game as a contest against a main rival for a Champions League berth.

Mata was handed a rare start on the right-hand side of midfield in the absence of Angel di Maria who was serving his one game ban following his bizarre red card against Arsenal.

The Spaniard provided balance in midfield without producing the magic he is capable of, but Mata believes the key to the win was the tempo of Man United’s play.

“It was arguably our best first half of the season,” he wrote on his personal blog.

“In those 45 minutes we got three goals and we could have scored some more. The team played with a fast, intense and vertical style, also pressing on Spurs’ half of the pitch. I was very happy for the fans after the disappointment in the FA Cup against Arsenal last Monday.”

It is yet to be determined whether or not Man United can continue to perform at those levels for the rest of the season, but the challenges keep coming as they head to Anfield next week for a crucial clash.
