France Football’s Philippe Auclair tweeted on Friday that, while a deal with the Red Devils has allegedly been agreed [Daily Star], the 25-year-old was said to favour a move to the Emirates ahead of Old Trafford – suggesting that Arsene Wenger hadn’t made an offer.

The Daily Star have now shed light on the Gunners’ sudden departure from the chase for the French midfielder’s signature – a decision that will surely have left a number of Arsenal supporters disappointed, particularly – as Auclair states – the player was eager on a move to north London.

According to the British newspaper, the reason is simple: Wenger didn’t believe that the Saints star would be value for money at the £25m price-tag Southampton are demanding.

What’s more, Wenger is said to be unconvinced that Schneiderlin would be a superior option to Francis Coquelin – with the 24-year-old’s form last season seeming to have convinced his manager that a defensive midfielder may not be a priority signing this summer.
