Manchester United may yet make a move for Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez, as they consider alternative options going into deadline day.

The 23-year-old defender has made 88 appearances for Atletico during a 5-year stay with the club, scoring 3 goals and impressing when called upon to feature in the heart of the defence for Diego Simeone’s men.

Gimenez has spent the summer in Russia with Uruguay and featured twice for his country during their run to the quarterfinals, also scoring a last minute winner against Egypt in their final group stage game.

According to The Daily Star, Manchester United have been linked to several high profile centre-backs during the current transfer window, including Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, but so far have failed to add to the signing of Diogo Dalot from Porto in terms of defensive reinforcement.

The latest man rumoured to be in line with a switch to Old Trafford is the Uruguayan La Liga star, with The Independent reporting that Gimenez is one of the clubs main targets should they fail to acquire Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

The young centre-half certainly has the experience and ability necessary to add quality to any team in Europe and should United table a last minute bid for him, the potential move would surely excite fans ahead of the new season.

In addition to Dalot, Mourinho has only managed to bring in Brazilian midfielder Fred and backup goalkeeper Lee Grant so far this summer, meaning one more signing could go a long way towards strengthening the squad going into a crucial year for the Red Devils.
