Five players who will be thrilled with Mourinho’s sacking and could begin to fulfil their immense potential at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s Old Trafford exit could reignite the careers of several Manchester United stars who felt the full force of the Portuguese tactician’s wrath.

The 55-year-old coach joined a growing list of managers incapable of reviving the fortunes of English football’s most successful club, faring little better at the helm than David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal did before him.

A Carabao Cup and Europa League win during his debut year at United suggested bigger things were on the horizon, but Mourinho was ultimately unable to secure any further silverware the following season.

Despite finishing runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League last term, the Red Devils were never really title-contenders, as their local rivals romped to the crown by a whopping 19 points.

Mourinho was powerless to halt the relentless rise of Pep Guardiola’s City side and prior to the 2018-19 campaign, he became a man completely resigned to mediocrity.

Unable to bring in the players he wanted during the summer transfer window, he began to publicly criticise the board, while also making it known that he had low expectations for the year ahead with his current squad.

It was little wonder that after a disastrous pre-season, United began the campaign with two defeats from their opening three games, which left them playing catch-up right from the outset. They have been unable to recover since, sliding down into anonymity in sixth place, and Mourinho has paid the ultimate price.

The media circus Mourinho has created off the pitch this season has been nothing short of farcical and the way he chose to lambast certain members of his squad in front of the camera was in equal parts shocking and embarrassing.

Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have all been in the firing line, completely alienated by a man who seems to have forgotten how to man-manage a group of players.

Caught Offside has compiled a list of five players who will undoubtedly be thrilled to see the back of Mourinho – all of whom could now begin to fulfil their immense potential under the stewardship of a new manager.

Paul Pogba

Pogba

The Frenchman’s fractious relationship with Mourinho has been one of the main talking points of the first half of the season, as the divide between the manager and his dressing room started to become irreparable.

According to the Daily Mirror, after a drab 1-1 home draw against Wolves back in September, Pogba stated in a post-match interview: “When we’re at home we should attack, attack, attack.”

Mourinho responded by stripping him of the vice-captaincy and from that point onwards, neither man has seen eye to eye. Pogba was left on the bench during United’s last two league outings against Fulham and Liverpool, seemingly on the verge of being frozen out by his tyrannical boss.

After hearing the news of his departure on Monday morning, Pogba took to social media to express his delight – as per ESPN – and now he will be looking forward to a fresh start under a new head coach.

The World Cup winner remains arguably United’s most talented and influential player, capable of controlling the game from midfield with his superb vision and physicality. Now he can once again be the team’s focal point and in a more forward-thinking set-up, the 25-year-old could quickly become one of the most effective players in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial

The second Frenchman on this list to have collided with Mourinho on more than one occasion is Martial, the man who set the Premier League alight during his debut season at Old Trafford under Louis Van Gaal.

As soon as Mourinho was appointed he began to demand more from the mercurial winger, calling him out for laziness and a lack of desire, while also restricting his playing time on the pitch.

Martial was heavily linked with a move away from the club during the summer, but he stayed and to his immense credit he won Mourinho round, emerging as the team’s most threatening player during the last few months with seven goals from 13 appearances.

Unfortunately, he has been standing out in a team completely devoid of pace, power and creativity in the final third, often having to manufacture his own chances rather than being fed the ball in dangerous areas.

Now Mourinho is gone, his teammates will be free to express themselves and he can be the main beneficiary of a more direct, fluid style of play, perhaps even as a central striker ahead of the misfiring Romelu Lukaku.

Alexis Sanchez

The Chilean superstar was supposed to be Man United’s next great number seven, but since his shock move from Arsenal back in January, he has looked a shadow of the man that tore defences apart for fun during his four-year stay at the Emirates.

Sanchez has scored just three Premier League goals in 22 matches for the Red Devils, often looking completely isolated on the left-wing, unable to link up with anyone in attack and predictable when running at defenders.

The 29-year-old thrived at Arsenal because they are a team that favours quick passing interchanges while moving constantly off the ball to create openings in the final third.

Mourinho’s United were static, negative and lacking in a clear identity, which became a clear source of frustration for Sanchez, who has thusly been unable to have any real impact at the Theatre of Dreams.

A mysterious muscular injury has kept him out of the United team for a few weeks now, but in truth, he had already fallen out of favour with Mourinho, amid speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint Germain – as the Daily Express reports.

If brought back into the fold by the new manager, Sanchez could finally get the chance to show what he is capable of and if he can reach anywhere near the same level he managed at Arsenal, United will have a lethal weapon within their ranks.

Fred

Next up is the Brazilian who was brought in during the summer transfer window for £52 million from Shakhtar Donetsk – as per the Telegraph – but has since only managed to feature in eight of United’s 17 Premier League matches this season.

The 25-year-old was billed as a box-to-box midfielder with a superb engine and technical ability capable of driving the team forward and breaking up play in midfield. Alas, there has been little sign of that kind of dynamism in his play over the last few months, as he has seemingly struggled to adapt to life in English football.

As per the Telegraph, when referring to Fred during a press conference on the 7th of December, Mourinho stated: “I think [with] Fred, when the team is defensively stronger and doesn’t need in midfield people that is more worried in giving some balance to the team than being involved in creation and attacking dynamics, the day we are stronger defensively, I think the horizons for Fred change completely.”

The current crop of United defenders are the same players that finished last season with just 28 Premier League goals conceded. They have not just become bad footballers overnight, it is more a case that they have lost all confidence in themselves the longer the Mourinho mayhem off the pitch has gone on.

Under a new head coach, do not be surprised if the Red Devils suddenly stop leaking goals, or if Fred gets the chance to start showing exactly why the club decided to fork out such a huge fee for his services during the last transfer window.

Andreas Pereira

Pereira

This man’s luck may be about to change drastically, after being forced into the background by Mourinho despite proving himself to be a superb centre midfielder capable of adding a new dimension to the United team on several occasions.

Pereira returned from a loan spell at Valencia this summer with a point to prove and was arguably United’s standout performer during an otherwise poor pre-season campaign.

The Brazilian started United’s opening two Premier League games this season against Leicester City and Brighton, the second of which ended in a 2-1 defeat and he hasn’t featured in the starting line up again since.

Six appearances across all competitions for a player as talented as Pereira is criminal, particularly given the fact that without him the Red Devils have still fallen 19 points behind table-toppers Liverpool and 11 behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

The 22-year-old is still something of raw talent, with plenty of room to improve, but his versatility could be a real asset for United at the moment, as he is able to play as a traditional number eight, a deep-lying midfielder or even as a winger.

Whoever the new boss may be, it is hard to believe that they will overlook Pereira in the same way Mourinho did, which means United fans could be about to witness the rise of a new Old Trafford hero.
