Man United were strongly linked with moves to bring in fresh defensive options over the summer though no purchase of that sort was forthcoming and the recent defeat at the hands of local rivals Man City has seemingly once again brought back into focus the apparent need for David Moyes to once again consider dipping into the transfer market.

TuttoMercato claim that the Premier League side are set to battle for Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic, who has in the past been dubbed the ‘New Nemanja Vidic’.

The Serbian international has been a solid performer at the Westfalenstadion and is reportedly available for a fee in the region of €25m (£21m), a fee that both Bayern Munich and Man United can clearly afford to fork out.

Subotic moved to Borussia Dortmund in June 2008 and has helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to two Bundesliga titles as well as playing a pivotal part in the club’s run to the Champions League final last term.

The rock solid no nonsense performer could well be the ideal man to help bring some order to the Man United defence and having already once raided Dortmund, to bring in Japanese international Shinji Kagawa, the Old Trafford side may be confident of repeating the trick.

24 year old Subotic has racked up almost 200 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and has 36 national team caps to his name.
