CaughtOffside understands that the former Old Trafford boss is seen as a viable replacement for Moyes if the club opts to sack the current manager mid-season.

Ferguson would be seen as a steadying influence on the club and would apparently be open to such a role, though has no intention of a full-time return to the post.

David Moyes has seen his side crash to three successive defeats and with Man United sitting down in seventh spot in the Premier League, some five points off a top four spot, there is a growing sense that the next month is a crucial period for the Scot and if there isn’t an improvement in form the club’s board is ready to act.

Man United are reticent to axe Moyes and have publicly backed the former Everton manager throughout the current campaign but are mindful that failure to secure, at the very least, a Champions League berth could prove disastrous on a financial and reputational level that the club can not afford to suffer.

There is speculation that a number of Man United’s senior players are questioning Moyes’s ability to lead the club and dressing room unrest could well be the final nail in his coffin as boss of the Premier League title holders.

It was Sir Alex Ferguson himself who recommended Moyes as his successor and as such he too is hopeful that the current boss can pull the club out of their current slump but is ready to step in should he be required.
