Manchester United have been given renewed hope in their long-running attempts to sign in-demand Benfica centre-back Ezequiel Garay this summer, according to reports in the Daily Express.

The Premier League champions have been keeping close tabs on the experienced Argentina international for some time now, with Garay having been on the verge of moving to Old Trafford last year, that is before the shock retirement of previous head coach Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, it is understood that the Scot’s successor at the Theatre of Dreams, David Moyes, is also a big fan of the central defender and is keen to lure Garay to the north west too, although initially  it had been expected that the player would be moving to big-spending Russian Premier League giants Zenit St Petersburg instead next season.

Zenit came close to signing the 27-year-old during the recent January transfer window, only for the deal to collapse, and now it appears as though the club have switched their focus elsewhere following the arrival of Andre Villas-Boas as their new boss, with the ex-Spurs manager set to move for his former player Jan Vertonghen instead.
