A delegation from the Old Trafford club is said to have flown in meet the 62 year old at his villa in the Algarve and have ironed out the terms of a managerial contract whilst also discussing plans to strengthen the Man United squad with the help of a £100m transfer war-chest.

Van Gaal has won seven domestic titles in three countries as well as a securing Champions League triumph during his spell at Ajax, which led to spells in charge at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

One imagines that the Dutch national team coach wouldn’t take on the Man United role until after the 2014 World Cup finals which could adversely affect the club’s pre-season build-up.

David Moyes was sacked after just ten months in charge of Man United following a disastrous debut campaign that saw the club fail to clinch a Champions League berth and suffered a club Premier League record of 11 defeats.

Ryan Giggs has taken over as interim boss until the end of the current campaign.
