The coveted Germany international has been tracked by the Red Devils for some time now, with former United head coach David Moyes having even been spotted in the Ruhr Valley running his eye over Reus at the turn of the year.

And as such, it was generally expected that United would be returning to the Bundesliga giants to make an offer for the 24-year-old when the summer transfer window reopened for business.

However, United may now have their work cut out to lure the player to Old Trafford next season after German sports daily Bild reported that Dortmund are set to hand their star man a bumper contract extension worth £6m a year in order to keep Reus at the club this summer.

Reus is currently contracted to Dortmund until June 2017 and has managed to find the back of the net 16 times in 28 league outings this season.
