Man United are set to conduct a massive spending spree with as much as £150m set to be invested in five top talents the Old Trafford side have earmarked as summer transfer targets.

CaughtOffside understands that Man United are set to unveil Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal as the permanent successor to David Moyes and will make the announcement within a matter of days and chief executive Ed Woodward has spoken to the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager in relation to the club’s intentions in the transfer window.

Man United’s top target comes in the form of Cesc Fabregas who has long been linked with interest from the Premier League side.

Having failed with previous bids for the Spanish international Woodward is looking to enter into negotiations with Barcelona, who have seen their transfer ban suspended, and Man United will offer up to £40m for the 26 year old.

Fabregas is said to be open to a move to Man United after a lacklustre season that looks likely to see Barcelona fail to secure any silverware.

Though the former Arsenal man has occasionally been dropped for crucial fixtures Fabregas is still a regular in Gerardo Martino’s first team set-up but there is a sense that the Catalan side may be ready to sell the midfielder as they look to conduct something of a squad overhaul.

Man United will push on with efforts to land Southampton teenager Luke Shaw, who is seen as a long term replacement for Patrice Evra.

Though the Saints are said to want as much as £30m for the 18 year old England man Woodward is to offer up to £23m though could agree a deal that would include incremental bonuses or even a percentage of future sales.

Man United are set to make both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck available for prospective suitors with both players said to be frustrated by their limited roles in the first team set-up. The sales of the pair will then push Woodward to continue his push to land PSG forward Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan is said to be unsettled at the Parc des Princes and Man United are ready to fork out as much as £60m to land the 27 year old, who has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season.

Van Gaal will look to use Robin Van Persie alongside Cavani with Wayne Rooney in a more withdrawn role which he is said to favour.

Prior to his move to the French capital Cavani scored 104 goals in three seasons at Napoli.

Woodward is also set to register Man United’s interest in adaptable Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen with veterans Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra all set to leave in the summer.

The £12m rated Belgian has spent much of the past 18 months warming the bench and may well jump at the chance of a move to Man United.

Vermaelen can effectively fill central defensive and left-back roles and is an experienced performer who can help stabilize Man United’s defence.

Van Gaal has also recommended that Man United make an offer for PSG defender Gregory van der Wiel who he feels would be a preferable option to those in the Old Trafford squad who can currently fill the right-back berth.

Man United are ready to offer up to £15m for the Dutch international who is into his second season in Ligue 1.
