The 19-year-old has been tipped to become a rising star with the current La Liga champions, even though he made just one appearance in the club’s march to the title last term.
CaughtOffside understands that United scouts were alerted to his potential whilst scouting midfield star Koke over the course of the campaign and now it is believed that new boss Louis Van Gaal will look to make a solid offer for the player after the World Cup.
United are in desperate need of some new defensive talent having lost both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of the season.
Van Gaal will make players who are more capable of hitting the ground running his top priority during the transfer window, but has identified Gimenez as one for the future and rates him so highly that he will cough up £8m to make sure the Uruguayan heads to Old Trafford.
However, it is also likely that should the club bring him on board he will be loaned out again for the season, heading back to La Liga for a year in order to get some much needed playing time under his belt.
