Man United are believed to have agreed a deal with Feyenoord to sign young centre-back Stefen de Vrij according to Italian source TuttoSport.

The 22 year old stared in Holland’s superb 5-1 win over Spain in their opening World Cup group game, scoring his first national team goal in the process, and could well be ready for a ‘step-up’ having spent his entire professional football career at De Kuip.

The tough tackling centre-back could be the ideal man to fill the void left by Nemanja Vidic’s departure to Inter Milan and arguably De Vrij has outgrown his Eredivisie side.

Incoming Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal clearly knows the defender well and may well elect to pursue other member of his Dutch national team set-up.

Van Gaal may well elect to pursue other defensive purchases given that Rio Ferdinand has also left the club and left-back Patrice Evra seems likely to do likewise.

De Vrij has made 135 Eredivisie appearances for Feyenoord since making his debut with the Rotterdam club back in September 2009.
