Man United are reportedly closing in on a double defensive capture with chief executive Ed Woodward on his way back to Old Trafford from the club’s North American tour according to Manchester Evening News.

Woodward will look to complete deals to strengthen a defence that is without veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who have joined QPR and Inter Milan respectively, with Man United said to be moving in to complete the signings of Feyenoord youngster Stefan de Vrij and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.

Seemingly the presence of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans doesn’t satisfy new boss Louis van Gaal and having spent £60m or so to land Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw there is every chance Man United will look to continue spending this summer to help erase the memory of last term’s woeful seventh place finish.

A move for 25 year old German World Cup winner Hummels is perhaps all the more likely given that Jurgen Klopp has already brought in a potential replacement in the former of Freiburg’s 19-year-old central defender Matthias Ginter.

Man United also retain an interest in Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen who could well be set for a summer transfer having spent the past 18 months as something of a bit-part player at the Emirates Stadium outfit.
